Self-Service Boarding - Bridging Today and Tomorrow

The increasing number of passengers in air travel leads to a higher volume of airplanes taking off from airports and, consequently, a greater demand for efficient boarding processes. However, airport staff resources are limited, and future personnel capacity is uncertain.

It all depends on the right technical infrastructure.

To address this challenge, the implementation of the right technical infrastructure is crucial. Self-Service solutions like eGates have already demonstrated for years that they are able to enhance passenger services by reducing queues and therefore waiting times as well as the potential for delays. In addition, ground staff gains capacity to take care of passengers who require assistance during boarding.

When it comes to create a seamless passenger journey, such a flexibility is extremely valuable. Especially in times of staff shortages.

The Implementation of a Self-Service Boarding Solution can be approached in Different Ways:

BARCODE-BASED:
Any passenger with either a printed or mobile boarding pass can simply place the barcode facedown onto a scanner at the gate. After a brief check, the gate opens allowing them to board their flight, significantly reducing the waiting time.

PASSPORT-BASED:
When passengers present the image page of their passport to the passport reader in front of the boarding gate, the gate will open for them to enter if their name and passport number are on the passenger list for the flight.

BIOMETRICS-BASED:
An increasing number of airports are implementing facial recognition technology at their self-boarding gates, aiming to enhance security while also making the boarding process more efficient. Here, the passenger´s own face serves as the proof of authorization.
